Meet Stephanie Daye, a 20-year veteran public school bus driver for Durham Public Schools. Stephanie is a mother to four children and she works two jobs to care for her family.
Stephanie, along with her classified public school colleagues, did receive a $500 raise in the last General Assembly budget, but it was pro-rated and ended up being around $300 before taxes were taken out. However, state employee bus drivers received a full $1000 pay raise, and teachers collected on average a 7% pay increase.
"Sadly, Stephanie's story is not unique in North Carolina public schools," said Local 391 President Mike McGaha. "But we can fix it. And Teamsters Local 391 stands ready to help budget writers in any way we can, including sharing more stories like Stephanie's."
The video series will continue each week with a new installment. All videos will be shared with the entire General Assembly, including Governor Pat McCrory and Lieutenant Governor Dan Forest, and the NC Capital Press Corps.
