  • Early Voting Now Through November 1 - Election Day is November 4
    Updated On: Oct 300, 2014

Teamsters Local 391 Mike McGaha issued a Union-wide challenge to all members to vote during this mid-term election.  Early voting began October 23 and continues through November 1.  Election Day is November 4.

"It's unfortunate that so many stay at home during elections that don't feature a United States presidential election," said McGaha.  "But control of the United States Senate and the North Carolina General Assembly can be more significant than the occupant of the White House."

McGaha said recent actions by the General Assembly under the direction of Speaker Thom Tillis, the Republican nominee for US Senate against Kay Hagan, leaves him no choice but to vote for Hagan.

"Tillis killed the film incentive program, he disrespects public school workers, he doesn't support collective bargaining, and he's a puppet of the Koch Brothers," McGaha said.  "The United States Senate cannont afford 6-years of Thom Tillis and the nightmare he's brought to our state."

McGaha said he is voting for pro-labor candidates across the board, candidates he helped screen this past year during the NC AFL-CIO endorsement process.

Business Agent Rick Armstrong was in those meetings with McGaha and that the slate of candidates supported by the North Carolina labor community is well vetted.  "We discussed some tough issues for politicians in North Caroina, including collective bargaining, strikes, first-responders and more," said Armstrong.  "At times we had to tell our legislative friends that we've been disappointed in past votes. We are continuing to educate all politicians that more money in workers' pockets is more money in our communities."

Recording Secretary Rachel Eitzen agrees that voting is the key to turning the fortunes around for many Teamsters Local 391 members.  "We have a majority running this state that just gave $500 to public school workers while giving $1000 to state employees," Eitzen said.  "Now is our opportunity to fire these legislators and replace them with legislators who believe in fairness and equity in the workplace."
