  • Stewards Stand United, Ready to Serve Members
    Updated On: Oct 276, 2014
IBT Secretary Treasurer Ken Hall (glasses) and Sean O'Brien (left) spent 2 days at the 2014 Stewards Seminar. President Mike McGaha and business agent Rick Armstrong welcomed them to the Thursday night dinner with stewards.

The 2014 Teamsters Local 391 Stewards Seminar came to a close this past week and the buzz throughout the Union is how informative and fun the gathering was in Myrtle Beach, SC.

President Mike McGaha gaveled open the 3-day seminar on Thursday, September 25 with speeches by Attorney General Roy Cooper, Senate Democratic Whip Josh Stein, and House Democratic Leader Larry Hall.  Cooper left the stage with an endorsement for Governor in his yet to be announced 2016 bid.

"Seminar is a great opportunity to bring our leaders together from every industry and to discuss the important issues facing Local 391," said McGaha.  "We want every steward leaving here empowered and ready to fight for our members at the negotiating table, in the grievance process, and as advocates in the public sector."

McGaha assembled experts from every field relevant to Teamsters Local 391 to serve as trainers in the seminars, including arbitration, negotiations, communications, lobbying, and more.  IBT Secretary-Treasurer Ken Hall visited with members on Thursday night and Friday to discuss national issues, including his work with McGaha in negotiating the UPS Master Agreement settled this past summer.

According to Secretary-Treasurer Vernon Gammon, the seminar was not all training.  "It's important that we spend time getting to know each other, sharing meals, and visiting with each other's families," Gammon said.  "Teamsters Local 391 is a family, and when we get together, we work hard, but we also fellowship."

The Local 391 family also included former Presidents RV Durham and Jack Cipriani, who attended the 2014 Steward Seminar.  Cipriani even stopped in for a few trainings offered on Friday.  "I attended the lobbying and advocacy training for our law enforcement and public school workers," said Cipriani.  "It was great to see our stewards in these sectors develop a lobbying and communication plan together."

McGaha said he is proud of the 2014 Stewards Seminar and looks forward to seeing the work reflected in upcoming contract negotiations.  "The bottom line for Local 391 is that we are here to fight for better pay and working conditions for our members," he said.  "This seminar focused on that like a laser and we're expecting great things as a result."
