  • Teamsters Local 391 Emails & Calls to Senate Effective
    Updated On: Jul 196, 2014
Senate Majority Leader Harry Brown (R-Onslow) presented the Senate's offer to the House Tuesday afternoon.

The North Carolina Senate unveiled an offer to the House today that matches the House's $1,000 permanent raise increase for non-teaching public school employees, including bus drivers, custodians, teacher assistants, and other important employees.

Under the Senate offer, public school teachers will receive an 8% raise.  A $1,000 pay raise for most public school school classified employees will average at 5%.  This is a major departure from the Senate's initial position, which provided a proposed $400 raise for classified public school employees while paying teachers an 11% raise in exchange for the revocation of teacher tenure.

Differences still remain between the House and Senate, including the Senate's exclusion of 5-bonus days included in the House budget and a proposed Senate cut of 50% of the remaining teacher assistants.  And the 50% funded in the Senate budget are only funded for one year.  Funding ends entirely for teacher assistants at the conclusion of the 2014-2015 academic year.

The Senate's offer is still being considered by the House, but Teamsters Local 391 has heard from top Republicans in the House that the offer will not be accepted as is.

Teamsters Local 391 President Mike McGaha said he appreciated the Senate's willingness to move closer to the House position, a budget Teamsters Local 391 supports.  McGaha also said he appreciated the action Teamsters Local 391 members took this week to put pressure on the Senate regarding pay for non-teacher public school employees.

"The Senate made a positive move today towards improving the lives of hard-working, dedicated public school employees who care and protect our children," said McGaha.  "A $1,000 pay raise will allow more of our members to pay bills, invest in our communities and improve the lives of their families.  It is our hope that this latest Senate offer indicates a final budget will be finalized soon."

McGaha issued a request Saturday on this website to Teamsters Local 391 members calling for outreach to the Senate.  According to the legislators, these calls and emails from Teamsters Local 391 members were helpful in getting both chambers closer in negotiations.
