  • Court Temporarily Blocks Unjust Dues Checkoff Law for Public School Employees
    Updated On: Feb 08, 2013

Judge Paul Gessner issued a temporary restraining order on Monday that stops the Republican-controlled NC General Assembly from unjustly denying public school workers the chance to pay their union dues via automatic payroll deduction. The new law will not go into effect until a lawsuit on the matter can be heard.

This means that Local 391’s classified school members will continue to have their union dues deducted from their paychecks, just as in the past, until the issue can be resolved at the court hearing.

"We are very encouraged by the legal basis of the court's actions," said Mike McGaha, Teamsters Local 391 President. "I believe it is clear that the legislature did not have the authority to take this unjust action. We look forward to the hearing on the lawsuit and the opportunity to beat back this anti-worker law once and for all. We will not stand silent while the Republican majority attempts political retribution towards our members."
