Welcome to Local Union 391 website. As the economy worsens, your Local has been vigilant in our effort to cut cost and grow your Local. In order for our Local to grow, we must concentrate on organizing efforts, political interests, and continuing support of our members. This summer Local 391 hosted for Joint Council 9 an organizing boot camp as part of Hoffa's Mighty Army of 1000 where the IBT conducted training for volunteer organizers across North Carolina and South Carolina areas. We want to thank all of you who volunteered your Saturday to this worthwhile cause. Hopefully in the months to come, your training will be utilized on campaigns that will be developing.
Political Interests of importance to our Local are Health Care Reform and the Employee Free Choice Act. Once again, we call on you to write your state Senator on the soon to be voted on Health Care Reform. We certainly support a plan with a public option which we feel will reduce the cost of premiums for many of the contracts that we maintain here in the Local. Each contract that we negotiate in this day and time, Health care is the main issue. Unless something is done on a national level, then we are sure to see more of our economic package going into health care. I urge you to call and write your congressmen and senators on this very important issue. (Click for letter to Senator.) Employee Free Choice Act has been put on the back burner in Congress because of health care reform. This legislation, if ever passed, would allow workers to choose whether they want to form a union by simply signing their name on a card with the majority of their coworkers at the same time they can still use the secret ballot process. This legislation gives workers the choice of making this important decision instead of management. Your help is needed by writing letters and making phone calls to you senator.
Carhaul - currently your Local Union along with the IBT and other locals across the country are handbilling GM and Chrysler dealerships. Over the last few years our carhaul members have made many sacrifices by agreeing to wage and benefit reductions upwards of 17.5 percent. GM and Chrysler are now demanding drastic cost reductions from the carhaul transport compaines delivering cars to the dealerships. These reductions would force our Allied members into liquidation meaning a loss of jobs. GM and Chrysler are both recipients of tax dollars in the form of bailout funding. We are focusing on dealers in our leafleting/handbilling efforts to send a message to GM and Chrysler automakers. YRCW has been hit very hard by bad economic times. Our members with this company have taken a 15% wage reduction to help the company survive. In spite of this, the company continues to struggle. We feel very cofident that because of the banks and the support of our members that YRCW will survive. Public Sector continues to be a big growth factor in our Local. Today we represent over 1800 School professionals and over 700 Police Officers across our state.
If you are not a member, feel free to browse our website. If you desire to have the benefits that come with membership in the Teamsters Union, contact us. We believe in helping people, and we realize that there is much work to be done. By working together, we can expect to succeed.
