Dear Union Brothers & Sisters:
I am writing to you today with the strongest urgency as some members in our Union, specifically those in the Central States Pension Fund, are faced with the proposed pension benefit cuts that are extreme and unfair.
These are pension that our members, along with fellow Teamsters across the country, earned during their careers, pension they rely on to pay bills, eat, and provide for their families. In exchange for hard work, these men and women, along with their families, are facing an uncertain future.
I am calling on all Local 391 members and retirees to ask our North Carolina delegation to strike a balance between saving the pension plan from insolvency without bankrupting individuals who have prepared for retirement.
Congress can strike that balance by supporting the KOPPA Act (Keep Our Pension Promise Act) filed in both the House and Senate. This legislation is fair, balanced and paid for in full if enacted by repealing the “benefit suspension” section of the MPRA and closes two tax loopholes frequently used by the wealthiest of wealthy Americans. The tax loophole closures will then offset the proposed cuts to our retirees.
I need every member of this great Union to take action today by using the congressional list, provided on the back of this letter, to make phone calls, send emails and to fight this unfair and unjust cuts to our pensions. If you are an affected pension holder, tell them your story, and ask our North Carolina delegation to support KOPPA.
Furthermore, for those who are concerned with the leadership of the Central States Pension Fund’s Executive Director, Thomas C. Nyhan, he was placed in this position by the Trustees of the Pension Fund. You may contact those Trustees by writing to them at the Central States Pension Fund, 9377 West Higgins Road, Rosemont, IL 60018-4938. Below you will find the list of Trustees:
Employee (Union) Trustees: Employer (Company) Trustees:
Charles A. Whobrey Arthur H. Bunte, Jr.
Marvin J. Westley Gary F. Caldwell
Marvin Kropp Greg R. May
William D. Lichtenwald Christopher J. Langan
It may not be your pension today, but I guarantee you that this fight will not end here. This is just the beginning and we must make our stand together.
In solidarity,
Mike McGaha
President
