Local 391 Leading Effort to Save Miller Brewing Jobs

The Miller Brewing company has been in operation in Eden since 1978. It's heralded as MillerCoors' most productive and cost efficient plant in its fleet of breweries.

Local 391 has been working since early Monday morning on a political, economic, and community solution to the Miller plant's announcement that it plans to close operations in Eden in September 2016.

Actions include continuous conversations with Congressman Mark Walker (R-6th District), Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger (R-Rockingham County), Mayor Wayne Tuggle of Eden, and countless more. It is the primary goal of Local 391 to save jobs and we are leading that effort.

Local 391 Secretary Treasurer Vernon Gammon released this statement Monday:

Local 391 was informed Monday morning by MillerCoors that its corporate leaders made a decision to close the Miller Brewery in Eden in 2016, a devastating blow to the loyal employees of that facility as well as the surrounding businesses and community in Rockingham County.

The Union immediately went to work contacting legislative leaders in the General Assembly (Senator Phil Berger), who immediately authorized the Department of Revenue to package an assistance program to avert this closure. It is our understanding that the company turned this down. Governor Pat McCrory is also getting involved to help save Miller in Rockingham County by reaching out to corporate leaders.

Local 391 will not give up. Now is the time for our community - workers, businesses, political leaders, and all concerned about good jobs - to come together to keep jobs in Rockingham County.

Over the next few days and weeks, Local 391 will keep employees informed of developments, actions it is taking, and ways for members to get involved, including a newsletter that will be distributed at Miller Brewing.
