  • President McGaha: Call/Write Your Legislator This Week
    Updated On: Jul 193, 2014
Teamsters Local 391 President Mike McGaha encourages all Union members to write/call their legislator in support of a $1000 permanent raise for all public school workers.

Budget negotiations between the House, Senate and Governor McCrory continue this coming week, beginning July 14.  If talks continue where left off from last week - which featured a walkout by the Senate, a veto threat by the Governor - then talks may continue through August.

Much of the impasse has to do with teacher salaries.  The House is offering 6% while the Senate insists on 11%.  The House's pay plan allows for an investment in other state employees, including public school worker employees,  and does not come with the cuts to Medicaid and other government services included in the Senate plan.

The Senate's pay plan also gives workers in the public schools a salary increase of half compared to other state employees, which is unprecedented in modern budgets.

Teamsters Local 391 released a statement last month in support of the NC House's budget proposal and to date supports the House offers to the Senate.  Their plan specifically includes a $1,000 permanent raises for all non-teaching public school employees (including bus drivers, custodians, mechanics, teacher assistants, and other important positions in the public schools).

Teamsters Local 391 President Mike McGaha encourages all Local 391 members - especially public school worker members - to write to their legislators in support of a significant pay raise for all public school employees.

"As negotiations continue between the House and Senate and Governor, we need to explain to legislators what a raise means to us," said Teamsters Local 391 President Mike McGaha.  "This will be the first significant raise our members have seen from the General Assembly in nearly a decade and the extra money in salary will help feed families, pay bills, and improve livelihoods for a group of employees who give so much each day to children in public schools."

McGaha reminds Teamsters Local 391 members that there are three plans floating around the General Assembly:  Governor McCrory's $800 raise, the Senate's $400 raise, and the House's $1,000 raise.  The House's plan also includes 5 bonus days that can either be used as vacation or can be redeemed for days worked upon retirement.
