Donny Brown Memorial Scholarship

In memory of Business Agent Donny R.    Claude Gray


Claude became a Teamster in 1973 working for UPS, part time. He worked as a full time package car driver from 1975 until 1984 and served as a Shop Steward. He was selected as Business Agent in 1984 to assist with policing and organizing for the local union. Claude also served as President of Joint Council 9 from 2000 until 2005. He was also an International Trustee of Local 246 in Washington DC. He is currently President of JC 9 and the former Chairman of the Piedmont Grievance Committee. In addition, he is a State Coordinator for Human Rights Commission for North & South Carolina. Was appointed by President Hoffa to the Blue Ribbon Commission, to study the finances of the IBT. Served on Project RISE, to rid our union of government oversight. He was the representative for UPS, Freight, IBC Wonderbread, Truckers Plus and MV Transportation.  Claude Gray was appointed President of Local 391 by the Executive Board effective May 16, 2009 filling the unexpired office term of the retiring President.  He also serves as the President of Joint Council 9.

   Vernon Gammon


Vernon Gammon became a Teamster in 1978 working for Miller Brewing Company and served 13 years as a shop steward. He served as a Rank and File Trustee from 1985 to 1992. Vernon was appointed as Business Agent in 1992 and was elected as Business Agent in 1993. Vernon serves as Vice-President , Recording Secretary and Trustee to the Brewery and Soft Drink Conference. He serves as Secretary-Treasurer for Carolina Food and Beverage Council. He was appointed to Northwest Piedmont Workforce Development as a Board Member. Vernon is assigned to represent Miller Brewing and Ball Corporation.  He was the representative for Tyson Foods and Rockingham County School System.  Vernon Gammon was appointed Secretary-Treasurer of Local 391 by the Executive Board effective May 16, 2009 filling the unexpired office term of Claude Gray.

   George Phillips


George became a member in 1979 at Johnson Controls working as a machine operator and a fork lift operator. Served over 13 years as a Shop Steward and was a member of the rank & file negotiations committee. George became an Organizer in 1993 as was selected as Assistant Business Agent/Organizer in 1995. In 1996 he was elected as a full time Business Agent. After being selected as Recording Secretary in 2005 he was elected in 2006. George is the assigned representative for Johnson Controls, Continental Airlines, Vistar Carolinas, Champion Industries and Rinker Materials.  In 2009, he was assigned as the representative for Alsco; Aramark-Greensboro; First Student; Forsyth & Guilford Co. Schools.

   Joseph Garner Jr.


Joseph joined the Teamsters in 1969 working for UPS in Durham NC. In March, 1970 he became a Shop Steward. After moving to Raleigh NC in 1992, he again became a Shop Steward from 1993 to the present. Joseph was selected as Trustee in December 2004 and was elected 2005.

Karen became a Teamster in 1989 working for BE Aerospace. She has been an elected Shop Steward for over 15 years and assists with organizing in the public sector. Currently a member of the Teamster's Women's Conference, Karen was selected as Trustee in 2006.

   Rick Armstrong


Rick is a third generation Teamster. He first became a Teamter in 1992 working for UPS in Jacksonville and Greenville, NC. He left UPS and became a police officer with the Raleigh Police Department. In 2006 he led the Raleigh Police Protection Association (RPPA) into affiliating with Teamsters Local 391. Since that time, he has served as President of the RPPA and as a shop steward for the local union. He was appointed by Local 391's Executive Board in 2009 as a Trustee to serve as a watchdog over the members' dues money.

Current Eastern Region Vice President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, & Director of The Brewery & Soft Drink Conference. Jack became a Teamster in 1967 working in locals 295 and 851. After moving to North Carolina in 1975 he served on the International Organizing committee at Miller Brewing in 1978. He was the first elected shop steward and first elected Business Agent at Miller Brewing. Served as Business Agent until he became President of Local 391 in 1995.  He served as President of Local 391 until May 15, 2009. Jack was elected as Eastern Region Vice President and selected as Director of Brewery & Soft Drink Conference in 1998, both positions he continues to hold today. Governor Mike Easley appointed Jack to serve on the Employment Security Commission, where he sets policy for the state's unemployment insurance system as part of the 5 member Board of Commissioners.

   Tony Scott


Tony is a second generation Teamster becoming a member in 1978. He began his career at Pilot Freight as a over the road driver. Later began driving for Yellow Transportation, along with preforming dock (warehouse) and switching duties. Tony was elected to fill the job as shop steward for all city classifications during his time at Yellow. In January 2000 he was elected as Business Agent representing freight barns. In 2002 Tony was assigned to represent Carhaul operations, Allied Systems, along with his freight barns-ABF-Kernersville & Durham; USF Holland-Greensboro & Raleigh; YRC-Kernersville, Durham & Raleigh; and white paper contracts with Ruan Transportation Co. Tony is the Chairman of the Bi-State Grievance Committee along with serving as Eastern Region Freight Committee Co-Chair and sergeant at arms.

   Wayne Gibbs


Wayne became a Teamster in 1981 working for B/E Aerospace, becoming a Shop Steward from 1983 until December of 1999. In this time he stayed involved with the local union and helped in organizing. In January 2000 became a Business Agent representing members from Fairchild, B/E Aerospace, United Plastics, Gilbarco Veeder Root and Alliance Imaging. In August 2006 was elected as Union Co-Chairman for the Piedmont Grievance Committee.  Wayne was assigned in 2009 as representative for Tyson Foods, and I.B.C. Merita.

   Bob Brown


Bob is a second generation Teamster. He joined the Teamsters in 1992 working at Roadway Express. He was elected and served as a Shop Steward in 1995 for 10 years and served as a Trustee from 2003 until 2006. He served as Political Coordinator for Local 391 in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008. He is a Delegate and the President of the Triad Central Labor Council. He also worked as a volunteer organizer for the local. He was elected as Business Agent in 2006 representing freight barns.  In 2009, Bob was assigned to represent our members at the following barns ABF-Kinston & Rocky Mount; CPC; DHL; First Transit-Cary, First Transit Durham & WolfLine-NCSU; IBC Wonder; MV Transportation-Garner; UPS Freight-Greensboro, Kinston & Raleigh; UPS Cartage-Greensboro; UPS-Edenton, Goldsboro, Greenville, Havelock, Jacksonville, Kinston, Lumberton, Manteo, & Rocky Mount; and YRC-Rocky Mount. In 2009, he was appointed by Governor Bev Purdue to the North Carolina Commission on Workforce Development.

Chip started his career as a Teamster in Cleveland OH in 1983, working on a freight dock for B&F Leasing. He later worked as a tow motor operator for Fischer-Fazio Foods. He was hired by the IBT in 1983 working in the Communications & Research Departments. From 1992-1999 he was the Assistant to the President of Teamsters Local 391. He served as Communications Director of the IBT from 1999-2000. In 2000 he became an International Representative for the IBT. Chip currently is a Business Agent and negotiates first contracts for the local. He is the union's registered lobbyist in Raleigh.  He is the assigned representative for Durham, Rockingham & Wake Co. Schools; UPS-Greensboro, High Point, and Winston Salem; and MV Transportation.
