North Carolina’s General Assembly is talking about a complete overhaul of our state tax system.

Here are where the GA’s Republican leaders in the Seante want to go: a massive shift of the state’s tax burden from the wealthy and corporations to the middle class and the poor.

Republicans are still talking about ending both the corporate and income taxes in our state. They plan to pay for state government with big sales tax increases.

Everybody would have to start paying sales taxes on groceries for the first time. And, people would have to start paying sales taxes on doctor’s visits, haircuts and on many other service items that are currently not taxed.

The wealthy would start paying taxes on these service items too. But, sales taxes will eat up a much larger share of middle class and the poor’s income than it will for the rich.

In the end, the Republican’s plan will result in another huge tax cut for the rich and another big boondoggle for big business.
