It quickly became clear that the new Republican majority had a very specific agenda when it took over in 2011 for its legislative agenda: to balance the budget on the backs of state employees. And, they were not going to let anyone get in their way.
When the Teamsters union and other organizations fought against health insurance premium cost hikes and proposals to slash state funding for NC K-12th grade education last year, the Republicans got mad.
In January, the Republican leadership of the state House staged a vote to override Governor Perdue’s earlier veto of a law that would have denied public school workers the ability to continue paying their union dues via automatic payroll deduction.
Attempts To Silence Our Voice
When the Teamsters argued that the Republicans should instead raise revenues to give pay increases and to keep health costs lower, they went on the attack. Their goal was to silence their critics.
“The Republicans thought that by eliminating payroll deductions the Teamsters would go away," said Rachel Wells, who serves as a Local 391 business agent for the school members. "They were wrong.”
A district judgerecently issued a restraining order temporarily stopping the Republican vote from taking effect. A full hearing will be held on the matter sometime around June.
Switching To Electronic Bank Transfers
“As the legal battle continues, we want to eliminate any attempt to silence our voices,” Wells said. “Therefore, we are switching over to electronic bank transfers as the paymentmethod for union dues.”
Teamster school members should contact their reps at 336-668-0441, ext. 218 to get a card, or click here to provide their information.
“As we approach the May 2012 legislative session, Local 391 must have the resources to focus on important issues like raising pay, increasing funding for vital school support positions and providing excellent representation for our members,” said Wells.
“Teamsters membership has meant so much to classified school employees over the years,” said JoCarolyn Wilkins, a Guilford County school bus driver and Local 391 organizer. “We know how important it is to have a strong voice on the job and in the legislature.”
